After the decision to focus more of our efforts on helping animals was made, and we were almost ready to launch, a rescued pet close to our family suffered an injury.
We’ve been told that Butch, (my in-laws’ rescued lab mix) has torn his ACL and meniscus. The cause of the injury is uncertain, but the surgeries are not. Butch will need multiple surgeries and physical therapy at a total of about $3,000 to get back to running around with his sister, Mia.
We acquired Butch about 18 months ago from a family who could no longer care for him. He was under weight and had bad skin but was over-all a healthy 2 year old Lab. Most of you have heard the stories of everything that Butch eats/destroys. What you don’t know is how gentle and sweet he is. How he loves to snuggle and sit in the window and watch the world go by. He has become a very important member of our family.
Over the winter we noticed that Butch was favoring one rear leg. After many trips to the vet and many anti-inflammatories, last week Butch took a turn for the worse. He stopped eating and started hopping around on his 3 good legs. The xray reveals that not only does he need ACL surgery, but his meniscusneeds repair. Additionally, because he is such a big boy, he is now doing damage to his other hind leg by favoring it.
Our poor boy cannot walk or climb the stairs to be with us at night. He cries in pain and lonliness. Bob or I end up sleeping downstairs so he will not be alone.
For now we have him on pain medications and more anti-inflammatories. Financially we are not in a good place right now. The vet estimates the surgery alone will be approximately $3800.00. Then there are his post-op visits. His recent xrays, meds and blood work cost over $1500.00.
Any help would be so greatly appreciated. Butch wants to be better so he can jump and run and walk like every young dog does.
